Institutional Branding: Co-Branding Message

Co-branding is a way to let your patrons know that the library is enabling access to paywalled content on Springer Nature’s platforms. On the platform the name of an enabling organisation will be displayed, but it is not possible to display a logo.

How we choose which name to show

When the HTML for an article or book chapter is built, our systems look at which organisation(s) have enabled access to the DOI. If this is only 1 organisation, the name of that organisation is displayed. However, in some cases several organisations enable access:

  1. A patron can be associated with several organisations. For example, they might work at University X but use University Y’s Wifi while they are visiting for a conference. Also, some patrons work in research groups that span organisations, or study in several universities at once. The frequency of such multiple associations has increased thanks to Persisted Access. Several of these associated organisations might then provide access to the same DOI.

  2. An organisation can license content via one, or even multiple, Consortia. If a contract is set up in our system for the Consortia rather than for the Institution, both the Consortia AND the Institution will be seen as providing access to the content.

When multiple organisations provide access, only one is shown, and which one we show is selected randomly, and might change randomly over time.

How to change the name that is displayed

The institutional name in the co-branding message can be modified on the "Settings" page in the Springer Nature Librarian Portal. This process also changes the institutional name in the Librarian Portal and in COUNTER reports.

Note that in the case of multiple associations, as per above, it is not possible to choose which organisation’s name is shown – the organisation will be chosen randomly among the organisations that provide the patron access to the DOI.

Also, it is not possible to add a logo to the co-branding message.

How the name is displayed on the platforms

Our co-branding message will appear on article and book chapter pages, and is displayed in a few different ways.

For journal articles on Springer Nature Link :

For eBook chapters on Springer Nature Link :

For journal articles on nature.com :

Co-branding customisation from the Librarian Portal does not change how institution names are presented on Scientific American.
