What is an Article in Press?

These files have undergone enhancements after acceptance but are not yet the version of record (VOR). This version is provided to give early access to findings and may be subject to further editing, as errors affecting the content may be discovered during the final production process. How is the Article in Press different to the VoR? 

The Article in Press version is unedited and may contain errors that will be corrected during the author proofing stages of production for the VoR version. Article in press versions will undergo additional copyediting, typesetting and review, and will not have the full functionality of the version of record. For example, supplementary files may still need to be added, links to references may not resolve yet, etc. The text could still change before final publication. 


Is the Article in Press citable? 

The Article in Press will be citable, and the DOI will remain the same between this version and the VoR. 


How does indexing work with an Article in Press? 

While it will not be indexed, please be assured that any citations of the Article in Press will be included in the indexing of the Version of Record assuming the journal is indexed. 


Can corrections/ amendments be made to the Article in Press? 

While you cannot make amendments or corrections to the Article in Press, the official version of your manuscript will be going through the proofing process and can be amended ahead of publication. 


Can I share the Article in Press version to repositories and scholarly sharing networks? 

The Article in Press is made available under the same terms as the published Version of Record. This means that for OA articles, authors can choose to share the Article in Press version on to other locations permitted by the terms of the CC licence. For authors who have chosen CC BY this includes any location; for authors who have opted for the CC BY-NC-ND licence this includes all non-commercial locations, such as institutional and funder repositories. However, since the Article in Press will be shortly replaced by the published version of record, we would recommend that authors share links to the Article in Press version and then post the final version of record to their chosen repository once available. 


Where authors have opted for the subscription publication route, they can share their accepted manuscript (AM) after the relevant embargo period has elapsed. Self-archiving of the Version of Record or Article in Press is not permitted for subscription articles.


Can I have a pre-print and an Article in Press online?

The Article in Press will be online in the same capacity as the version of record (which will replace it once ready) and will be therefore have the same licensing. There would be no issues with the Article in Press being present online at the same time as a pre-print. 


When will my Article in Press be online?

The article in press will be online very soon after the OA license and rights are completed by the author.


Can I opt-out of this service?

 Articles in press are in place for Fully OA journals as an author benefit to accelerate the dissemination of research and is embedded in the journal workflow. Authors will not be able to opt out for individual articles.
