Frequently Asked Questions - Get Found Faster - Book ORCIDs 2025
Why are we doing this?
Springer Nature is updating the metadata of thousands of book publications from the past 14 years.
A key part of this update is adding Persistent Identifiers for originators like ORCID iDs to ensure authors are uniquely identifiable and their work is properly indexed and discoverable across systems.
Why did we contact you?
You are listed as an author or editor of one or more books published by Springer Nature.
For at least one of these titles, we do not yet have an ORCID on file for you.
What is ORCID?
ORCID stands for Open Researcher and Contributor ID.
It is a unique, persistent identifier that distinguishes you from other researchers and connects your work across systems and platforms.

How will my ORCID be used?
Once submitted, your ORCID will be:
- added to the metadata of your books
- shared with trusted external partners (e.g., libraries, retailers, indexing services)
- displayed on Springer Nature Link
How can I ensure my ORCID record is updated correctly?
To allow Springer Nature to update your ORCID record:
- Your ORCID profile must be set to public visibility
- You must grant permission via a notification email from ORCID after your publication is registered
What happens next?
We aim to complete this metadata update by the end of 2025.
In the unlikely event that we encounter any issues matching your ORCID to your publications, we may contact you again.
What if I don’t have an ORCID?
You can register for free at: https://orcid.org/register.
It only takes a minute, and you’ll receive a permanent identifier for your scholarly work.
What if I use a different email address?
Please use the same email address you received this message on.
If you submit a different address, we may not be able to match your ORCID to your book(s) correctly.
Why did you contact me on that email address? It doesn’t belong to me.
No action is required. Unless you fill in the form, we will not add an ORCID in this campaign.
Why do you mention this book, but not others?
We mention only one example to avoid long lists, and it could also be that another book has been published using another email address.
What if I don’t respond?
Participation is voluntary. However, some of our partners now require persistent identifiers like ORCID for proper indexing and metadata delivery.
Without one, your book may not be fully visible or correctly attributed in their systems.
How is my data protected?
- The submission form is hosted internally via Microsoft Forms and is encrypted.
- Your ORCID and email address will only be used for the purpose of updating your author metadata.
- Data will not be shared beyond the systems and trusted partners involved in this project.
- All data is handled in accordance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
