Hawaii General Excise Tax

Effective November 1, 2019 Springer Nature Customer Service Center, LLC and Springer Nature America, Inc. will be charging Hawaii General Excise Tax (GET) on orders with a ship to address in Hawaii. The GET is not a sales tax since it is a tax on businesses and it is common for businesses to charge their customers GET by visibly passing it on. The 4% rate applies statewide, except in a county where the tax rate includes a .25% or .5% county surcharge.

Hawaii enacted economic nexus legislation, effective July 1, 2018. Per the legislation, a person is engaged in business in Hawaii and subject to general excise tax, whether or not the person has a physical presence in the state; subject to certain thresholds which we have met.
