Society Web Portal/HTTP Referrer Access Issues

If your society has access set up via a member portal in their website then it is quite likely using http referrer technology to gain access to the journal(s) in SpringerLink.

Firstly please check that you are correctly logged into your society's website/portal and your subscription is up to date.

If you are experiencing access issues after correctly logging in please try some of the following:

Cache/Cookies
Stored cache/cookies in your web browser (e.g. internet explorer) have been know to cause access/authentication issues. In many cases, users find that the authentication process is restored if they clear cache/cookies from their browser and close and re-open the browser. They should then visit the society site first, before visiting SpringerLink, log in on the society site, and then use the content links there to access SpringerLink content. (The access problem seems to happen mainly when users have first visited SpringerLink, then the society site, before returning to SpringerLink via content links on the society site.)

HTTPS to HTTP
Internet Explorer in particular does not pass HTTP header information from secure to non-secure sites (HTTPS to HTTP). This causes access not to work in cases where the external site uses HTTPS. This is a security implementation of the browser and not something we can do anything about. If you are using internet Explorer please try a different browser such as Firefox or Google Chrome.

Internet Security Software

In some cases internet security settings can be preventing access. Examples of this would be security settings in web browsers, anti-virus/security suites such as Norton and/or firewalls. Sometimes these settings will have an option to block http referrers, if such an option is turned on please make sure it has been turned off. Often adding http://link.springer.com/... to a list of trusted sites will resolve this problem.

If after trying some of these options you still don't have access please contact us at societies-online@springernature.com
